Memorable Moments.....

Because we all love these wonderful little cars, I hope you will forgive me for the quality of these old pictures. (see below)

I bought the car new in Singapore in 1971 when I was serving with Australian, New Zealand and United Kingdom forces.

Quickly I found the joys of winding it up to 9000 rpm and out accelerating most other cars on the road then. Next I was introduced to the Singapore Motor Sports Club, where not only nationals, but many Brits and Aussies attended regularly and were the backbone to the early days in Singapore motor sports. The variety of cars were enormous, from open wheeler Bentleys, to Corvette Marko Sharks, Brabham Viva Estates to all the latest from Minis, Toyota and Honda.

I entered in time trials, hill climbs and sprints, the BP Malaysian rally where I put it over a bank after lying in 6th place, and the Singapore GP Clubman event in 1972. There, my little red Honda not only won the 10 lap race in a tropical downpour, but lapped the whole field except for a Subaru. The management and mechanics from Singapore were in raptures, and flew out a competition head from Japan for me to use in the following Malaysian GP Clubman events. It was reputed to give me 120 mph, but it wasn't tuned right, and I spun out on the first lap in a fast corner, caught up in the middle of a bunch of hot Minis. Honda Coupes can't match the corner speed of competition built 1298cc Minis, but I could catch them on top speed, and far out-brake them. I ended up with a 3rd in class in Malaysia.

I returned to New Zealand in 1973. I had fitted low profile tyres then, a slightly lower suspension, widened the wheel arches and painted it a metalic dark blue. Later I traded it in on a 1971 Datsun 240Z. Forgive me.
